Case Histories
The following case histories illustrate how the Bowen Technique can be successfully applied to a number of common problems.
Back Pain
A retired builder of 67 had a longstanding back problem. He had slipped a disc 5 years before and had made a partial recovery, but he was experiencing sciatic pain down his left leg.
On assessment it was clear that he had restricted movement around his sacroiliac joint at the base of his spine, probably caused by many years of lifting. He responded well to the first session where the therapist concentrated on his lower back with significant reduction in pain levels.
At the second session the therapist worked around his pelvis and hips to ease the pressure on the sciatic nerve as well as the upper back and neck. By the fourth visit he reported being pain free and was given a series of exercises to ensure that his back remained flexible.
Sports Injury
A budding athlete suffered damage to his knee during a training session resulting in considerable swelling and pain. On the first visit it was only possible to perform the lightest of moves due to the swelling. Despite minimal work on the first session a considerable amount of easing of the symptoms was experienced. The second session consisted of more detailed work around the knee and ankle. After a few days he was able to resume training. After the third visit he was able to resume full training with the pain disappearing completely.
Fibromyalgia
A lady who had been suffering from fibromyalgia for over three years found her whole body was very sensitive and was having trouble sleeping. The inability to work due to her condition was making her depressed.
The therapist took some time to explain various self-help strategies that could help her condition Little physical work was carried out in this first session.
On her return she admitted being sceptical about the treatment but admitted noticing a marked reduction in her pain levels and a marginally improved sleeping pattern. The second session consisted of much more treatment.
By the third treatment she had noticed a significant increase in her energy levels and her pain had decreased to the extent that she was considering returning to work.
Over the following months she found that having a regular treatment every three to four weeks allowed her to live a relatively normal life, with a more positive slant on life she felt more able to deal with her condition on a daily basis.
